wooden steamer

Wood

This wooden steamer, tubular in shape, features steam holes drilled between the body and the base. The bucket-shaped upper part, with its opening facing upward, is lined with woven rattan to hold the food. The lower part, with its opening facing downward, is used to stand in steaming water. These two components are interconnected to allow steam to pass through. A lid is placed on top to steam the food thoroughly. This is a common design regardless of size and is typically crafted from a single piece of Chinese parasol tree trunk.

In SaySiyat and Atayal cooking, food was traditionally roasted directly over an open flame. However, at times, grains and other miscellaneous food items were processed using steaming utensils. Since both tribes often did not use pottery for cooking, their steaming utensils were typically made of wood.
