Wooden Plate

Yami (Tao)

尺寸:46.5*46.5*3.7 cm

Wood

The wooden plate features a central sun motif, from which radiate concentric patterns composed of circles, zigzags, diamonds, waves, and semicircles. The underside has a shallow foot with a cross pattern engraved in the center. The back of the wooden plate displays concentric patterns following the curvature of the plate, with a plastic hanging loop near the edge.

Indigenous wooden plates used for holding food come in various shapes, sizes, and decorative patterns. Among them, Yami (Tao) have distinct names and designs for their wooden plates due to their dietary culture’s strict rules and taboos regarding food type and consumers. Therefore, these wooden plates should not be used interchangeably.

These plates are typically made from hardwood such as bishop wood, breadfruit tree, Formosan michelia, or red dragon eye tree, commonly found on Orchid Island (Lanyu). Geometric patterns are sometimes carved onto wooden plates using line-carving techniques. Circular wooden plates like this one are primarily used for serving cooked meats and often feature a raised circular platform in the center for cutting meat.
