The beheading flute is a traditional instrument of the Truku. It is primarily crafted from bamboo, featuring a blowhole on top and three to five holes on the front. In the past, following a successful headhunting mission, Truku men would play the flute to console the spirits of those who were beheaded, guide these spirits back to their tribes, and transform them into a source of power for their communities. During ceremonies of headhunting celebration, the beheading flute would be played by the tribal priest to celebrate the triumphant return of the warriors. Due to its sacred nature, only headhunters or tribal priests are permitted to play the beheading flute, and it is not to be casually played by ordinary individuals.
